Background of the study
Digital linguistic creativity refers to the innovative use of language in online communities, where users generate novel expressions, idioms, and syntactic constructions. In Nigeria, platforms such as Instagram and Twitter have become vibrant hubs of creative language use. Instagram, with its visually oriented posts, often encourages users to integrate imagery and text in inventive ways, resulting in unique linguistic blends and neologisms. Twitter, on the other hand, with its brevity and rapid interaction, fosters the creation of concise, witty expressions and hashtags that encapsulate cultural and social commentary (Adeola, 2023). These platforms, though distinct in format, both contribute to the evolution of Nigerian digital discourse by promoting linguistic experimentation and innovation (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to compare the creative linguistic practices on Instagram and Twitter, exploring how different digital environments stimulate language innovation. The research will examine user-generated content, analyze emerging linguistic trends, and evaluate the role of digital creativity in shaping contemporary communication (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
While digital linguistic creativity is widely observed in Nigerian online communities, there is limited comparative research on how different platforms influence this phenomenon. Current studies often focus on isolated cases or single platforms, failing to capture the broader spectrum of creative language use. This gap limits our understanding of the mechanisms driving linguistic innovation in diverse digital contexts, posing challenges for educators and language planners who need to address rapidly evolving communication practices (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the study
1. To compare linguistic creativity on Instagram and Twitter.
2. To identify innovative expressions and neologisms in user-generated content.
3. To assess the impact of digital creativity on Nigerian communication practices.
Research questions
1. What creative linguistic forms emerge on Instagram and Twitter?
2. How do platform characteristics influence language innovation?
3. What implications do these innovations have for digital communication?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores digital linguistic creativity across major Nigerian social media platforms, offering insights into how diverse digital environments foster innovative language use. The findings will inform sociolinguistic theory and guide educators and policymakers in adapting to emerging digital communication trends (Adeola, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing Instagram and Twitter content among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline language practices.
